In the not so distant past, Right Brain Brewery (RBB) was bustling along in a mere 3,600 square feet of brewing and serving space in the Warehouse District of Traverse City’s downtown. Although things were mighty fine, it was apparent that the brewery needed some more room to stretch its infamous creative muscles and house their increasingly excited fans.
To make all of those dreams come true, RBB picked up and moved several blocks south to the SoFo District (also known as South of Fourteenth Street). For those of you unfamiliar with the area, it was quite the leap, but the leap resulted in a new warehouse with 36,000 square feet of brewing pleasure. Leif Kolt, Events & Marketing Coordinator for RBB, explains, “At Right Brain Brewery our main concerns are always our beer and the people who drink it.” This was the inspiration for a move, and the reason for RBB’s continued success.
With change, there is always an air of apprehension, and this move meant nothing less for RBB’s dedicated following. Kolt explains, “Obviously everyone in the Right Brain network was curious, tentative and maybe a little nervous about our move. Even with all the planning that went into the months leading up to it, there are so many variables that leave a lot of unknowns. So, it goes without saying, that we are extremely happy with the reception our new building has been getting.” The reception is one of excitement; one that only is continuing the vibe that was well established and trusted at the old location. The ambiance has lived on, and only been magnified in a comfortable manner without losing any of its soul.
RBB’s move means that they have a lot more space to work with, and that space is definitely not going to waste. Kolt smiles as he says, “Everything is better. A bigger building means more room for events and a higher capacity during peak pub hours. No one gets turned away here.” Instead, the added space means that RBB can (and does) host private parties, charity events, neighborhood meetings, fundraisers, art shows, concerts and any other event that can fit in their brewery.
The dedicated customers demand the ingenuity that they’ve grown to know and trust from RBB, and the new location has only enhanced those offerings. At any given time, RBB offers at least 20 of their own beers on tap, as well as mixing combinations from local wine/cider/mead/soda suppliers to round out the options to 50. In their short history, RBB has experimented with over 100 different beer recipes, from the super rare single batch seasonals to ones that made it onto their regular taps in rotation. The added space just means even more beer. Kolt says, “My top 3 personal favorites are (in no order) Mangalitsa Pig Porter, Steve The Imperial Brown, and Looping Owl. I strongly dislike boring beers and these three are the complete opposite of that.” This seems to be a common sentiment among the influencers at RBB!
