Spring is here! It’s time to go outside, revisit our beautiful cities, and be active within our communities. Read on to see what is taking place in The Mitten during the month of April.
Tiger’s Opening Day – April 7th – Detroit
Nothing says “spring” quite like Opening Day. Forget Memorial Day, Opening Day is the unofficial start to summer. The Detroit Tigers face The Boston Red Sox at Comerica Park in Detroit for their first home game of the season. The game starts at 1:10PM. Take the day off and join your fellow Tigers’ fans in the streets as we welcome the start of another great season.
Big Little Hero Race – April 15th – Traverse City
Race season is upon us at last! The Big Little Hero Race offers a 10k, 5k, and one-mile fun run for the kids. The races starts at Northwestern Michigan College‘s campus and heads out onto the east side of the Old Mission Peninsula. This is a superhero themed race, so be sure to wear a costume. The one-mile fun run starts at 9AM, the 5k and 10k start at 9:30AM. All proceeds go to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Michigan.
Scrap Witches Scrapbooking Weekend- April 21st – 23rd -Gaylord
Do you like scrapbooking? Do you want to meet more people who do? Then this event is for you! Scrap Witches Scrapbooking weekend takes place at Treetops Resort. This is a three-day event full of great food and vendors with unlimited crafting supplies. Call 888-TREETOPS to register for this hilarious event.
Jeep the Mac – April 21st – 23rd – Drummond Island
Groups are always parading their prideful collectibles across the Mackinac Bridge. Now it’s the Jeep’s turn! Meet in Mackinaw City on Friday morning and cross the bridge for the welcome party in St. Ignace. Saturday, participants can head to Drummond Island for trail riding and more festivities. Register for this event via the St. Ignace Visitors Bureau.
Build a Bat House – April 22nd – Ontonagon (Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park)
There is no better way to celebrate Earth Day than to learn more about how bats provide such a valuable role for our planet. $44 covers the cost of supplies, but be sure to bring your own lunch, hammer, safety goggles, and ear protection. Take your new bat house home to help sustain our ecosystem! Register by April 15th at www.porkies.org.
Short’s Brewing Anniversary Party – April 29th – Bellaire
Come celebrate 13 years of Short’s Brewing in Bellaire on April 29th. Festivities start at 4pm and include live music, limited beer releases, and amazing food. The entire street in front of the brewery is closed for this celebration. 50% of the proceeds from the anniversary party go to The Village of Bellaire Downtown Development Authority.
Traverse City Chocolate Festival – April 30th – Traverse City
Traverse City may be known for its Cherry Festival, but did you know they hosted a Chocolate Festival as well? Come taste chocolate fountains, cakes, and candies at the City Opera House. This event is held on April 30th from 11:30AM-2PM or 2:3o-5Pm. Tickets are $15.50 and can be purchased here or at the door.
Growler Gallop Atwater 5K – April 30th – Grand Rapids
Atwater Brewery opened a location in Grand Rapids in October 2016. The Growler Gallop Atwater 5k is the first race in the Beer Flight Race Series put on by Trivium Racing. Finishers can expect a well-marked course throughout Grand Rapids and a beer at the finish line. Age group winners even receive a growler full of beer. The race is $33 and starts promptly at 4pm.
